11.5.2007

The intractable weather refuses to calm itself and we are forced to remain at Advance Base Camp (6.440m). The temperature remains constant at around -20 degrees. It is snowing incessantly and the wind is up at an unruly 25 km an hour. Our original plan to set off for the summit on Saturday has therefore had to be postponed by a day, but at least we are preserving energy.

The weather forecast from Switzerland is extremely promising however and, all being well, on Sunday we will begin climbing up to the infamous Camp 1 on the North Col. By the time we reach Camp 3 (Tuesday, 15.5.2007), we will be at an altitude of 8.400m where, it is said, you already have the feeling that the whole world lies below your feet!

Everest   It’s a pity there will not be much time to stop and savour it. The summit day will start sometime between 8 and 10pm that evening and headlamps and moon light will illuminate the last part of our trek! After climbing the Three Rock Steps, and traversing the tight rope of the exposed Summit Ridge, (with it’s 3000m sheer drop on either side!), we should stand on the roof of the world at sometime between 6 and 9 am (1 and 4am - Central European Time) on Wednesday morning. But I really don´t want to look that far ahead! Wish me luck and keep me in your thoughts, Klara.
